Everhart got his first feature win of 2007 on the 24th of March -- just 4 days following his 59th birthday! Check out myspace.com/bencoracing for some interesting photos from his 1st six decades of life!
As he has for most of the past two racing seasons, Bennie was driving his Benco #9 HOT Chassis -- sponsored by Coast-to-Coast Tower Service & Specified Urethane Systems! Since Bennie went into this 4th night of racing tied for 3rd in track points, he started the feature on the 4th row outside (qualifiers line up according to points average w/ high points towards the back of the front 12).
I was busy video-taping Bennie in victory circle after the race, & didn't notice that Darrel Turner -- in SIMS #028 -- was notifying the track officials that he intended to claim the motor out of our SIMS #9.
The motor in the #028 was leaking fluids all over the place but nevertheless, pursuant to the SIMS rules, Bennie agreed to swap motors -- but only IF #028 was legal (also covered in the SIMS rules).
When Mr. Mooney checked the vacuum on 028 (several times) he pulled between 9 & 10.5, instead of the required 12 at 12. Although Mr. Mooney was at first confused about the precise intent of the vacuum rule, & thought that this vacuum reading was NOT illegal, Darrel Turner's #028 car WAS subsequently DQ'd for failing tech, & his claim on our #9 was not allowed.
Note :: According to the SIMS rules ::
Quote: Any sabotage discovered in removal of a claimed engine will result in termination of SIMS membership for 12 months. Drivers are held accountable for actions of crews while engine removal is taking place. The claim will be disallowed and money returned to the claimer. Any visual inspection of engine being claimed or swapped deemed illegal will be treated as sabotage.

Seems there was an active & multi-level discussion the prior week about the use of 10,000 rpm flywheels in the SIMS Limited Modifieds. Mark Chewning stated that stock flywheel means stock or OEM, & that the 10,000 rpm flywheels are NOT legal in the SIMS class.
So we are not surprised when the front end of Bennie's #9 is raised up in the air so they can check for one of the 10,000 rpm flywheels (which he did NOT have). His vacuum is also checked after #028 fails to pass the vacuum test. #9 pulls 16 at 12 using the same gauge that was used on #028.
The underlined names are NOT on the current SIMS membership list.

SIMS Limited Modifieds Thunderbird Speedway Saturday, March 24, 2007
If I understood correctly -- starting this night, the SIMS Limited Modifieds will ALWAYS be the final race of the night at Thunderbird Speedway. Seems the SIMS cars are now the class that most people want to stay & watch! The new permanent order of racing is supposed to be :: Mini Stocks :: Modifieds :: Street Stocks :: Jr. Minis :: Bombers :: SIMS Limited Modifieds ::
Also -- starting the 1st Saturday in April, the gates will not open until 6 p.m. (instead of 5 p.m. as they have been doing).
Everhart takes the lead in the 1st lap of the restart following the 3rd caution of the night, when #19 & #9 start side-by-side behind #100. There is one more caution, but Everhart holds onto the lead for the remaining laps of the race.
Feature Starting Lineup (from the pitboard) ::
| 100-4 44-3 98-028 73-9 19-99 1-911 70-5 65-2 128-010 008-13 43-40 54-90
| 11:13:48 :: The SIMS Limited Modified racing begins. #4 starts front row outside & leads until she leaves the track during the 1st caution of the night (she has a flat prior to that caution, which caution I assume was for the #13 car sitting in turn/3/4?).
| 11:20:02 :: Restart after 1st caution ::
| #100 out front followed by #s 028-44 9-3 98-19 99-1 73-70 2-90 . . .
| 11:23:40 :: Restart after 2nd caution (during which #9 is pulled to infield w/ wadded up right rear quarter panel which they try to remove but it won't let go so they let him continue as he is) ::
| #100 out front followed by #s 44-028 9-19 3-98 1-90 99-2 . . .
| 11:26:09 :: #100 & #19 are running a close 1st & 2nd with #9 in 3rd several car-lengths behind them. Behind the front 3 entering turn 1 (missed them at the flagstand) are #s 90 & 028 & 3 & 98 & 1 & 73 . . . They make another complete lap with 100 in the lead. #90 is in 4th.
| 11:26:28 :: #s 98 & 028 & 3 are 3-wide at the flag stand & less than a car length apart. The next car behind them is #1. As they are entering turn 1 . . .
| 11:26:29 :: #100 & #19 are side by side exiting turn 2. #19 is ahead of #100 entering turn 3 & exiting turn 4.
| 11:26:42 :: #9 passes the flag stand in 3rd place still several car-lengths behind #19 & #100.
| 11:26:43 :: The light in turn 1 is green as #19 & #100 enter the turn, followed by #9 & #90.
| 11:26:46 :: The caution light is on in turn one as #s 3 & 98 & 028 & 1 enter turn 1 (didn't catch them at the flag stand) as #19 is exiting turn 2. During this caution (for #65) #90 & #19 are both stopped on the front straight-a-way at the flag stand -- discussing the lineup? The lineup board lists
| #100 out front followed by #s 19-9 90-98 028-3 1-73 . . .
| 11:30:53 :: Restart after 3rd caution.
| 11:31:12 :: When they pass the flagstand after completing one lap #9 is in the lead followed by #s 100 & 98 & 19 & 90 . . . Behind them entering turn 1 are #s 3 & 73 & 028 & 1. #19 gets sideways in the middle of the turn & this backs up the field directly behind him, but they are out of my camera's field of vision after that. Going thru turns 3/4 are #s 9 & 98 & 100 followed by what looks like #s 90 & 73 & 028 & 1 . . .
| 11:31:27 :: The yellow & green lights are on in turn 3 as the leaders are going thru that turn.
| 11:31:40 :: #19 is in the infield with the right rear quarter panel of his car hanging off. I don't see a flat on the right side, but can't see the left side. He climbs out of his car . . . etc. #19 doesn't restart. [Not on my video, but this caution is also when #1 stops at the flagstand -- displeased with ?]
| 11:35:08 :: #1 can be seen leaving the track at turn 3. He doesn't finish the race.
| 11:35:56 :: Restart after 4th caution with . . .
| #9 out front followed by #s 100-98 90-3 73-028 et al . . .
| 11:37:36 :: Bennie Everhart in his Benco Racing #9 HOT Chassis takes the checkers at Thunderbird Speedway for the 1st time in 2007. Shortly thereafter he is notified that #028 Darrel Turner is claiming his motor . . .

If you were at the races this night, or have read the postings on WhoWon this week, you are probably aware that Davis #19 (& Sigman #1?) had some sort of disagreement with how the lineups were done during the SIMS feature race this night.
In the event of a caution, the alignment will be made based on the last completed green flag lap. This is basically what Thunderbird does.
According to my video of the race, I cannot pinpoint a time where either #19 or #1 are lined up in the wrong place -- but then I'm not absolutely sure I completely understand the lineup procedures on restarts either.

|  | The stories behind the claim? « Reply #2 on Mar 27, 2007, 1:47pm » | |
We have been told by several people that Turner #028 was loudly voicing his displeasure in the pits after the heat races about being mad at Everhart (they stated Turner was saying that #9 hit him so hard in the heat race that he hurt his neck) -- & that because of that he was going to claim him if he finished in the top two. Turner did not say this to our face, so at this time we cannot vouch for the validity of this story. If it is true, well -- it must be nice to have $500 cash laying around -- just in case you get mad at someone during the heat races.
On the other hand -- we've also been told by several people that a certain former SIMS member put up the money for this claim & provided the motor for 028 to run that night so he could stay on the lead lap (can't claim if you are a lap car).
They all have told us that quite a few people in the pits knew that this was being planned, & that this certain former SIMS member specifically wanted the motor out of our #9 car, supposedly after thinking it ran exceptionally well on the 17th at Thunderbird. At this time, we have not personally verified the truth of this story either.
I heard Turner myself -- after he was DQ'd at tech -- telling Everhart that he was tired of him & Haney ganging up on him & that he was gonna get them sooner or later. So anyway . . . back to my video . . .
The starting lineup (from the pitboard) for the 3rd heat race was :: 010-65 54-44 028-9 99-43 ::
010 & 65 did not take off together on the 1st start, so the flagman did not throw the green flag. Just about everybody bumped another car and / or was bumped by somebody when the race did not go green.
After the 2nd start, #9 goes high on the back straight-a-way to pass 028. Entering turn 3 #028 pushes up the track & makes contact with both 9 & 99. That is the last time 9 is anywhere near 028, as 9 quickly pulls away from 028.
Note :: Darrel Turner #028 is the same guy who got black-flagged in May 2006 for turning Bennie head first into the front straight-a-way wall at Thunderbird. On the video from that night #028 can plainly be seen turning directly into the right rear of #9. Don't know if he did it on purpose or not, but I DO know that he never once tried to talk to Bennie or apologize for what he directly caused -- deliberate or not.
Bennie subsequently hit the wall so hard -- head-on -- that all four tires lost contact with the track surface & the car began to turn over onto the driver's side. Thankfully, the car instead came back down on all fours & hit the ground hard enough that it popped all four tires. The wrecker guys were a little perplexed with trying to get his car off the track with 4 flats -- said they had never seen that happen before!
